Cavallo-Insel

Cavallo Island, known as Isula Cavaddu in Corsican and Isula Caddu in Sardinian, is a small private island in the northern Lavezzi archipelago, within French territorial waters in the Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia.

Strict environmental management has preserved the island’s pristine natural environment. Over the years, Cavallo has become a coveted haven for celebrities seeking exclusivity and seclusion.

Der French architect Jacques Couelle designed and built several dwellings on the island, sensitively integrating them into Cavallo’s natural landscape. Visitors experience unspoiled beaches, crystal-clear waters, and an abundance of wildlife, far from the crowds and bustle of nearby Corsica and Sardinia.

The Island of Hidden Wonders

Granite formations carved out the beautiful Cavallo Island from the sea. For centuries it lay untouched, until the ancient Romans arrived. They harvested the island’s luxuriant travertine rock to build columns for decorating their majestic monuments and villas.

After the Romans withdrew, the island was again abandoned and forgotten for many years. Sailors avoided it, wary of its deceptively beautiful shores that hid hidden dangers.

In 1800, a shepherd named Terrazzoni rediscovered the island and settled there with his flock. Jean Castel, a Parisian bon vivant and owner of the famed Castel Club, later transformed the island into his private retreat where he would spend much of the year entertaining friends.

Beneath the island’s crystal clear waters, archeological treasures periodically surfaced? relics from various ages spanning millennia. Over the years, they were collected on the island.

Granite outcroppings beneath the sea also sheltered groupers, emerging to observe divers and snorkelers.
